Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has affirmed that the border-related issues between Nepal and India will be resolved through established diplomatic mechanisms. During the 'Direct Question Hour with the Prime Minister' in the House of Representatives, PM Oli assured lawmakers that there is a clear and determined stance among the Federal Parliament, the Government of Nepal, and all Nepalis regarding Nepal's international borders.
PM Oli reiterated that the new political map of Nepal, adopted through the second amendment to the Constitution on June 18, 2020, includes territories such as Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, Lipulek, and others east of the Kali (Mahakali) River as per the Sugauli Treaty of 1816. He highlighted the unprecedented national consensus on this matter.
The Prime Minister mentioned that border discussions were held during the Seventh Meeting of the Foreign Minister-level Nepal-India Joint Commission on January 4, 2024, where commitments were made to conclude work on the remaining sections of the Nepal-India border. He informed the House that the Nepal-India Border Working Group has been continuously engaged in technical work, including the construction, restoration, and repair of border pillars, as well as preparing details of the non-man's land and 'cross-holdings' on the border.
PM Oli emphasized that the Government of Nepal remains committed to resolving border issues through talks and diplomatic channels based on the Sugauli Treaty, various maps, historical facts, and evidence. He assured that initiatives would be taken to resume the Joint Working Group meetings at a convenient time for both sides.
Additionally, the Prime Minister shared that a company of the Armed Police Force Nepal has been established at Chhangru in Darchula, with five more Border Outposts (BOPs) towards India and one BOP towards China being established as well.
Addressing concerns about corruption, PM Oli described it as a major hurdle to good governance and development in the country. He stated that eliminating corruption is a priority for the current government. Responding to questions on the gold smuggling scandal, cooperative fraud scam, the fake Bhutanese refugees scam, and other issues, he affirmed the government's commitment to upholding good governance and protecting national interests by controlling corruption.
PM Oli expressed determination to bring the culprits to justice, irrespective of their identity, and mentioned that many of these scandals are currently under judicial consideration. He assured that justice would be served accordingly.
